Cataracts
Give the Gift of Sight
Cataracts are usually associated with older people, but they are one of the most common causes of avoidable blindness among children in developing countries.
An estimated 40,000 children in Bangladesh are affected by childhood blindness. Cataracts are caused by cloudy patches that develop in the eye, caused by the build-up of protein in the lens. As cataracts grow, they reduce vision and if left untreated, can lead to blindness.
While cataracts may be present at birth (congenital cataract), they can also appear during the first few years of life. For families living in extreme poverty, caring for a blind child increases their hardship.
However, cataracts can be removed with a simple operation. Our partner is one of the leading eye care specialists in Bangladesh, with several hospitals around the country.
